XM Overview and Features
XM is an overseas broker that primarily offers FX and CFD (Contracts for Difference) trading. Often marketed to Japanese users under the XMTrading brand, it’s well-known for its ease of starting with small amounts, high leverage, multiple account types, and MT4/MT5 compatibility. In addition to FX currency pairs, it offers over 1,400 products, including gold, crude oil, stock indices, and stock CFDs.
1) Easy to Start with Small Amounts
XM offers account types with a minimum deposit of just $5, making it easy to start with minimal initial capital. This is especially appealing to beginners who want to practice with small amounts first.
2) High Leverage
XMTrading allows leverage settings of up to 1,000x (500x for Zero accounts) depending on the account type. While this allows for large positions with small margins, it also increases the risk of large losses, making it both an advantage and a point of caution.
3) Zero-Cut (No Margin Call) Design
XM accounts offer negative balance protection as standard, meaning that even if your account balance goes negative due to sudden fluctuations, you are usually unlikely to be charged additional funds. This is one of the main reasons for its popularity among individual traders in Japan.
4) MT4/MT5 Compatibility
XM supports MetaTrader 4 (MT4) and MetaTrader 5 (MT5), making it easy to analyze using EAs (Expert Advisors) and indicators. It’s suitable not only for discretionary trading but also for those who want to try automated trading.
5) Multiple Account Types
XMTrading offers the following main account types. The different types cater to different purposes, making it easy to choose one that suits your style.
Micro Account: Easy to practice with small amounts and small lot sizes. Suitable for beginners.
Standard Account: The most common and balanced type.
KIWAMI Account: Emphasizes low spreads and includes swap-free instruments.
Zero Account
Emphasis on extremely narrow spreads. However, trading fees apply.

About XM Account Types
You can essentially think of XM account types as having four main types.
For XMTrading in Japan, the four main types offered are Micro, Standard, KIWAMI Extreme, and Zero. The minimum deposit for all is equivalent to $5. Micro, Standard, and KIWAMI Extreme offer a maximum leverage of 1,000x, while Zero offers a maximum leverage of 500x.
1) Micro Account
This is a beginner’s account designed for practicing with small amounts of capital.
Features
1 lot = 1,000 currency units
Small minimum trade size, making it easy to practice with very small amounts of capital
Maximum leverage: 1,000x
Minimum deposit: equivalent to $5
MT4 / MT5 compatible
Suitable for:
People new to FX
People who don’t want to deposit a large amount of money right away
People who want to practice while keeping losses small
Points to note
Since both profits and losses are small,
it may be a little difficult to get used to the “feel of real-world capital.”
2) Standard Account
This is the most standard account.
Features
1 lot = 100,000 currency units
Maximum leverage: 1,000x
Minimum deposit: Equivalent to $5
Minimum trade size: 0.01 lots
MT4 / MT5 compatible
Suitable for:
Those who want to trade in real-world situations, not just practice with small amounts
Those who want to start with a safe option among XM users
Those who prioritize bonuses and ease of use
Points to note:
It is more susceptible to price fluctuations than the Micro account.
It is quite dangerous for beginners to enter with high lot sizes right away.
3) KIWAMI Account
A popular account focused on cost-effectiveness.
Features
Low Spreads
Maximum Leverage: 1,000x
Minimum Deposit: Equivalent to $5
Swap-Free on Select Instruments
1 Lot = 100,000 Currency Units
MT4 / MT5 Compatible
Suitable for:
Those who want to minimize trading costs
Those who want to day trade or short-term trading
Those who are concerned about swap costs
Points to Note
While quite popular within XM,
If you’re a beginner and this is your first account, it’s safer to understand its features first.
4) Zero Account
A professional-oriented account specializing in ultra-low spreads.
Features
Minimum spread: 0 pips
However, trading fees apply
Maximum leverage: 500x
Minimum deposit: Equivalent to $5
1 lot = 100,000 currency units
MT4 / MT5 compatible
USD / EUR / JPY supported
Suitable for:
Those who want to scalp or engage in ultra-short-term trading
Those who place a high priority on the apparent spread
Those who can manage trading costs including spread + fees
Important Note:
This is very important.
Choosing a Zero account based solely on its “narrow spread” is likely to lead to disappointment.
XM’s official website states that the Zero account incurs a $5 fee per 100,000 currency units. Therefore,
the actual cost must be judged based on “spread + fees.”
Comparing the differences between the four accounts:
*Detailed conditions may vary depending on the instrument, time of day, and market conditions.
Features of the Standard Account
In short, XM’s Standard Account is:
“The most user-friendly basic account, suitable for beginners to intermediate traders.”
This is the type of account most often chosen as XM’s “first account.”
While you can start with a small amount, the actual trading size is larger than that of the Micro Account, making it more suitable for actual trading than practice.
1) XM’s “Standard Model” Account
The Standard Account is the most balanced account offered by XM.
It offers a good balance of spread, trading unit, and ease of use, making it suitable for both discretionary trading and EAs (automated trading).
2) 1 Lot = 100,000 Currency Units
This is quite important.
In the Standard Account,
1 lot = 100,000 currency units.
This means that price fluctuations have a much greater impact than in the Micro Account (1 lot = 1,000 currency units).
Image
Micro Account → For very small-scale practice
Standard Account → Standard size for actual trading
Therefore, it can be used by beginners, but
if you increase the lot size too much, profits and losses will fluctuate more than you might expect.
3) Minimum Deposit is Equivalent to
XM’s Standard Account can be started with a minimum deposit equivalent to $5.
Therefore, it is one of the easiest to start with among overseas FX brokers.
However, this is a point that is easily misunderstood.
It does not mean that “you can trade sufficiently with $5.”
It is merely the “minimum amount required to open an account and start trading,” and
to actually practice stably, it is safer to have a little more surplus capital.
4) Maximum Leverage is 1,000x
The Standard Account supports leverage up to 1,000x.
This is one of XM’s attractions, but at the same time, it is also a major point to be aware of.
Advantages
Allows for large trades with limited capital
High capital efficiency
Disadvantages
Easily loses capital in an instant
Beginners are more likely to mismanage lot sizes
In short, the Standard account is easy to use, but using leverage carelessly is dangerous.
5) Spreads are “standard,” but not specifically narrow
The Standard account has an easy-to-understand cost structure within XM, but it’s not an account specializing in the narrowest spreads.
XM officially states that the Standard account has a minimum spread of 1 pip.
On the other hand, the KIWAMI Extreme account and Zero account tend to be more advantageous for those prioritizing cost.
In other words, the Standard account is
Not an account that pursues ultra-low costs
Instead, it’s simple and easy to use
6) No trading fees in principle
The Standard account basically does not have separate trading fees like the Zero account.
Therefore, even beginners can easily understand “how much is being spent on what”.
This is quite significant.
For FX beginners,
a clear cost structure is less likely to lead to mistakes than a narrow spread.
7) MT4/MT5 Compatible
The Standard account is compatible with both MT4 and MT5.
Therefore, it is suitable not only for discretionary trading but also for EA (automated trading) and indicator analysis.
Suitable for:
Those who want to manually enter trades
Those who want to perform chart analysis
Those who want to try automated trading
8) Hedging Available & Negative Balance Protection
XM offers hedging (two-way trading) and negative balance protection for all accounts, including the Standard account.
This is a point that is often emphasized in overseas FX trading.
However, this is also easily misunderstood;
It does not mean “safe.”
The accurate understanding is that it is simply
“designed to make it difficult to incur debt due to unexpected and sudden fluctuations.”

Standard Account: Advantages and Disadvantages
XM’s Standard Account is
“the easiest to use, but not a perfect account for everyone.”
In short,
it has the significant advantage of being easy for beginners to choose first,
but it can be quite disadvantageous if you underestimate the costs and lot size management.
Advantages of the Standard Account
1) Easiest to understand and use
The biggest advantage of the Standard Account is its simple rules.
Unlike the Zero Account, which has complexities such as “narrow spreads but separate fees,”
it’s easier for beginners to grasp the costs.
This is a major reason why it’s easy to choose as your “first live trading account.”
2) No trading fees in principle
The Standard Account generally has no separate trading fees.
In other words, the main cost is the spread.
This is quite important, as it has the advantage of “making it easy to understand how much you’re actually spending” for beginners.
The Zero Account, even with its low spreads, has a $5 fee per 100,000 units, making a simple comparison difficult.
3) Up to 1,000x Leverage Available
XM’s Standard account supports leverage up to 1,000x.
This makes it easier to take positions even with small amounts of capital, resulting in high capital efficiency.
This is advantageous for those who:
Want to start with a small amount of capital
Want to have ample margin
Want to hold multiple positions even with small amounts
However, as will be explained later, this also directly leads to its biggest disadvantage.
4) High Versatility with MT4/MT5 and EA Compatibility
The Standard account is compatible with both MT4 and MT5, and EAs (Expert Advisors) can be used.
Therefore, it is suitable not only for discretionary trading but also for automated trading and indicator analysis.
In other words,
“You can do almost anything”
It’s quite user-friendly.
5) Good Compatibility with Bonuses
In XM’s promotions, the Standard account is often treated as an eligible account for bonuses.
In fact, XMTrading Labo also advertises Standard accounts as eligible for deposit and trading bonuses.
This is a significant advantage for those starting with a small amount of capital.
This is because it allows for a little more flexibility in margin compared to starting with only your own funds.
However, bonuses are not a reflection of profit-taking ability, so it’s important to consider them separately.
Disadvantages of the Standard Account
1) Spreads are not the “cheapest”
This is the biggest disadvantage.
The Standard account is officially listed as having a minimum spread of 1 pip on XM’s website.
On the other hand, the KIWAMI account has a minimum spread of 0.6 pips, and the Zero account has a minimum spread of 0 pips.
In short, the Standard account is
easy to understand
but not the cheapest
This difference is particularly noticeable for those who engage in
scalping
taking small profits of a few pips
short-term trading with a high number of trades
2) Large Lot Sizes Make Beginners Prone to Accidents
Standard accounts use a lot size of 100,000 currency units.
This has a significantly larger impact on price movements compared to a Micro account (1 lot = 1,000 currency units).
Underestimating this is dangerous.
A common mistake beginners make is thinking,
“0.01 lots will be small,” but in reality, it’s quite heavy depending on your capital.
In short, while standard accounts are easy to use,
they are close to “real-world trading size.”
Using them carelessly for practice will result in losses greater than expected.
3) High Leverage is Too Convenient, Conversely Dangerous
While the maximum leverage of 1,000x is attractive, honestly,
this is more likely to be a trap than a weapon for beginners.
The advantage is “being able to bet big with a small amount of capital,” but
the flip side is that
it’s easy to lose money with a small amount of capital.
Therefore, the weakness of the Standard account is not the account itself, but
it’s prone to breaking if misused.
4) Not necessarily suitable for swap trading
Standard accounts typically incur swaps (interest rate adjustments) overnight.
Therefore, if you plan to hold positions long-term or aim for swaps, costs can accumulate depending on the instrument.
On the other hand, XM’s KIWAMI account offers swap-free trading under certain conditions,
so if you intend to hold positions for a long time, that might be a better option.
5) Often mediocre for cost-conscious traders
To put it bluntly, the Standard account is
“average in all aspects, but not particularly outstanding”.
In other words,
For very small-amount practice → Micro is more suitable
For low-cost trading → KIWAMI is more suitable
For very short-term trading → Zero is more suitable
In these situations, the Standard account may not be the optimal solution.
Standard Account Bonuses and Campaigns
XM’s Standard Account is the account type that best leverages XM’s bonuses and campaigns.
In short, if you prioritize bonuses, the Standard Account is a very good fit. Conversely, a major characteristic is that it tends to offer more favorable benefits than the KIWAMI or Zero accounts.
1) Account Opening Bonus (No Deposit Required)
XM consistently offers an account opening bonus for newly activated real accounts.
The available offers include a ¥15,000 account opening bonus. This is a “trading bonus” that allows you to try trading without depositing your own funds. While the bonus itself is usually non-withdrawable, profits earned using the bonus are advertised as withdrawable.
Compatibility with the Standard Account
The Standard Account is designed for those who want to “try XM with a realistic trading scale,” so this account opening bonus is a very good match.
In other words,
Instead of making a large deposit all at once,
it’s easier to follow a process of observing the actual execution and usability
and then making a full deposit if it suits you.
2) Permanent Deposit Bonus (100% + 20%)
XM offers a permanent deposit bonus for standard accounts.
From what we can see, it’s 100% up to the first $500, and then 20% up to $10,000 thereafter, for a total deposit bonus of $10,500. This is a system where credit that can be used for trading is granted to the deposited funds.
How is it advantageous?
For example, imagine this:
Deposit $500 → 100% bonus effectively makes your margin equivalent to $1,000
Subsequent additional deposits are increased by 20%
This is how you can use it.
Therefore, a strong point is that it makes it easier to create a margin even with a small amount of your own capital.
3) Loyalty Program (XM Points / XMP)
Standard accounts are often advertised as eligible for XM’s loyalty program (XMP).
This program allows you to accumulate points with each trade, which can then be exchanged for bonuses or cash. XM’s advertising currently states that participation is available from Gold status.
Compatibility with Standard Accounts
This is a surprisingly strong point.
This is because the Standard account is
“the most frequently used account”, so the more you use it, the more you feel the benefits of XMP.
However, it’s important to be realistic; unnecessarily trading just to earn points is counterproductive.
Limited-Time Campaigns Also Work Well with Standard Accounts
XM sometimes offers additional limited-time campaigns separate from its permanent bonuses.
Examples of such campaigns confirmed in 2026 include the following:
Early Spring 100% Deposit Bonus Promotion (February 2nd – February 28th, 2026)
An additional 100% bonus of up to $500. New registrants during this period are offered a combined 100% bonus of up to $1,000 (including the regular deposit bonus).
Unlimited Cashback Campaign 2026 (Announcement for March 2026)
This is advertised as a cashback program based on trading volume and other conditions. Detailed conditions change periodically, so it is essential to check the conditions before participating.
In the past, seasonal event-type additional deposit bonuses, such as the Golden Week 100% bonus, have also been offered.

XM Standard Account Spreads
In short, XM’s Standard Account spreads are:
“Not too wide, but not particularly low-cost.”
Minimum Spread
According to XMTrading’s information for Japan, the minimum spread for a Standard Account is 1 pip.
This doesn’t mean it’s always fixed at 1.0 pips; it’s an estimate of the narrowest possible spread. Actual spreads fluctuate depending on market conditions and time of day.
A. FX Currency Pairs
According to XM’s official information, the minimum spread for FX in a Standard Account is 1.0 pips.

Standard Account Maximum and Minimum Lot Sizes
XM’s Standard account has a minimum lot size of 0.01 lots and a maximum lot size of 50 lots.
This is clearly stated on the official XMTrading account type page.
1) Minimum Lot Size: 0.01 Lots
With a Standard account, you can place orders starting from 0.01 lots.
Since 1 lot = 100,000 currency units, 0.01 lots = 1,000 currency units.
This means you can start quite small without having to bet large amounts right away.
For example:
0.01 lots → 1,000 currency units
0.10 lots → 10,000 currency units
1.00 lots → 100,000 currency units
This sense of scale is quite important.
2) Maximum Lot Size: 50 Lots
With a Standard account, you can open a maximum of 50 lots per position.
That is, 50 lots = equivalent to 5,000,000 currency units.
This isn’t just for beginners; it’s a fairly large trading limit.
The most important point for beginners to pay attention to:
This is extremely important.
“It’s safe because the minimum lot size is 0.01” is not true.
This is because XM’s standard account allows leverage up to 1,000x, making it easy to oversize positions even with small capital.
In other words, what’s truly important isn’t knowing the maximum lot size, but knowing the lot size you should be using.

Leverage and Stop-Out in a Standard Account
XM’s Standard Account offers a maximum leverage of 1,000x and a stop-out level of 20%.
These two are crucial basic conditions for using XM. XMTrading’s official website states that the maximum leverage for a Standard Account is 1000:1, and the contract and terms and conditions state that the stop-out (forced stop-out) occurs at a margin maintenance ratio of 20%.
Standard Account Basic Conditions
Maximum Leverage: 1,000x
Stop-Out Level: 20%
Negative Balance Protection: Yes
Hedging: Possible
In short,
you can make large trades with a small amount of capital, but your position will be automatically closed if the maintenance ratio falls to 20%.
What is 1,000x Leverage?
1,000x leverage means
you can hold large positions with a small amount of margin.
For example, you can roughly think of it as follows: Required margin = Transaction amount ÷ Leverage
Example
If you hold 1 lot (100,000 currency units) of USD/JPY,
with leverage of 1,000x, the required margin will be kept quite small.
Even on XM’s official website, a standard account has 1 lot = 100,000 currency units, with a maximum leverage ratio of 1000:1.
What is a 20% stop-loss?
In XM’s standard account,
when the margin maintenance ratio (Margin Level) reaches 20%, forced liquidation begins.
XM’s public documents explain this as “automatic liquidation starting with the most unfavorable positions.”
How to think about the margin maintenance ratio
Roughly expressed as:
Margin maintenance ratio = Effective margin ÷ Required margin × 100
When this falls below 20%,
a stop-loss (forced liquidation) is triggered.
Relationship with Negative Balance Protection (Zero Cut)
XM offers negative balance protection.
This means that even if your account balance goes negative due to sudden fluctuations, there is a protection system in place to prevent you from being asked to make additional deposits.
While this is reassuring,
it doesn’t mean you won’t lose money.
More accurately,
it’s less likely to turn into debt.
However,
it’s still quite possible to lose all your funds.
This is the correct understanding.
Swap Points on a Standard Account
In short, swap points on XM’s Standard account are:
“They occur normally. The longer you hold a position, the more it impacts costs (or profits).”
Basics of Swaps on a Standard Account
Swaps occur.
Whether buying or selling, one side is likely to be positive and the other negative.
Holding a position from Wednesday to Thursday counts as 3 days’ worth of swaps for FX/precious metals.
The values are not fixed and fluctuate daily.
For long-term holdings, swap points can have a greater impact than spreads.
In other words,
a Standard account is “less noticeable for short-term trades, but becomes increasingly important the longer you hold a position.”
What are Swap Points?
Simply put, swap points are
“interest rate differences and holding cost adjustments” between two currencies or commodities.
In FX, for example:
Selling a low-interest currency and buying a high-interest currency → Likely to result in a receipt
Selling a high-interest currency and buying a low-interest currency → Likely to result in a payment
This is how it works. XMTrading Labo also explains that swap points are an adjustment for interest rate differentials, and the values vary from one FX company to another.
Main categories where swaps are likely to occur:
FX currency pairs
Spot precious metals (e.g., GOLD/SILVER)
Spot stock indices
Stock CFDs
Spot energy
Cryptocurrency CFDs
Conversely, futures CFDs (futures indices, energy, some metals, etc.) are advertised as swap-free for all account types.
This is quite important.
Even for the same “index” or “energy,” the holding cost can differ between spot and futures contracts.
Basic timing of swap accrual
XMTrading Labo states that swaps are accrued in the morning Japan time (at rollover). This is usually around 6:00 AM Japan time (7:00 AM during winter time).
In other words,
if you hold a position across that time, swaps for that day will be incurred.

XM Account Opening Procedure
Opening an XM account is quite simple.
However, the most important point is that it’s not just about “opening the account”; you must also complete the subsequent identity verification (account activation) before you can actually use it. This guide explains how to create an account for partners. You can also open multiple accounts, such as micro or zero accounts.
① Registering through XM’s official website
First, go to the XM account opening form and enter your basic information.
The information you’ll mainly need to enter is:
Name (in Roman letters)
Country of Residence
Phone Number
Email Address
Password
After submitting the registration form, you will receive a verification email. Click the button in that email to complete your account registration. XMTrading Labo states that a standard MT5 account (base currency JPY, leverage 1,000x) will be automatically opened at this point.
② Logging into the Member Area or App
Once email verification is complete, you will be able to log in to the XM Member Area or app.
Here, you can check your account and registration information.
The following items should be checked:
Account Type (Initially Standard)
Trading Platform (Usually MT5)
Base Currency (Usually JPY)
Leverage Setting
If there are any input errors, you are likely to encounter problems during subsequent identity verification.
③ Identity Verification (Account Activation)
This is essentially the most important step.
At XM, account activation (identity verification) is required to use a real account. The app guide also requires you to enter your name, address, investor information, etc., and submit identity verification documents.
There are basically two types of documents required:
A. Proof of Identity
Examples:
Driver’s License
My Number Card
Passport
B. Proof of Current Address
Examples:
Certificate of Residence
Utility Bill/Receipt
Bank/Credit Card Statement
XMTrading Labo has conditions for proof of current address, such as being issued within the last three months, and it must match your registered information.
④ Upload Documents
Identity verification documents are uploaded from the member page or app.
Tips for Increased Success Rate
To summarize the examples of deficiencies listed on XMTrading Labo, the following are likely to be rejected:
The image is blurry.
The corners are cut off.
The text is illegible due to reflection.
It’s too dark.
Name, address, and date are unreadable.
Also, the supported file formats are JPG / JPEG / PNG / PDF / GIF, and the maximum file size is 5MB.
⑤ Wait for Approval
After submitting the documents, XM will verify them.
This usually takes 30 minutes to 1 business day, but may be delayed on weekends, holidays, or during busy periods.
Once approved, your member page or app will show “Verified.”
After this, you can finally start using it fully.
⑥ Deposit and Start Trading
Once your identity verification is complete, you can deposit funds and start trading.
There are basically three things to do here:
Choose a deposit method
Log in to MT4 / MT5 or the XM app
Select a trading instrument and start trading
However, it’s much safer to start with a small amount or a demo account to get a feel for it, rather than immediately depositing real money.
You can also open a demo account with XM.
